Views From Watford Fans

After a summer of change at Vicarage Road there is understandably a mixture of emotions from Watford fans. Some are excited and look forward to the future, however some are unsure or upset over the players that have left this summer. I’ve asked fans of the Hornets 5 important questions regarding what’s gone on at the club this summer and many fans have chosen to give their opinion through responding to these questions.

Favourite Watford signing so far?

New right back Allan Nyom was the clear winner to the question ‘who is your favourite signing so far?’ I thought no player would have had such a clear margin of victory in response to this question but Watford fans have taken quickly to their new right back. The Cameroon international is very good both defensively and going forward, much to the surprise of the opposition at times. I certainly look forward to seeing whether he can maintain this level of performance in the future especially against the top sides in this division.

Other players mentioned were centre back Sebastian Prodl, centre midfielder Valon Behrami and familiar face Adlene Guedioura who all tied for second place.

Which ex-Watford player should the club have kept hold of?

Once again Watford fans were agreed on the answer to this question. Striker Matej Vydra seems to be the player Watford fans will miss the most as many felt he had the quality to succeed in this division. I wouldn’t dispute this view given that the striker has scored 36 goals in 83 appearances for the club and many thought he would play a crucial role this season after signing a 5-year deal for the Hornets.

However it is important to mention Quique Sanchez Flores didn’t feature him in any of the first 4 Premier League games and so there wasn’t much point in having Vydra if Flores didn’t think he was up to it. In addition Watford have done well with the negotiations side of things regarding Vydra, which is something we will come on to later.

Angella was also mentioned a fair few times by fans, which is understandable given that he had 2 good years in a Watford shirt. However he has made the move on loan to QPR.

How well has Gino Pozzo done for the club this summer?

Most Watford fans have been quite positive when assessing how Gino Pozzo has done this summer. Some stating that he has added strength in-depth and has added quality in the most important positions where the club were lacking. Examples of this include signing an out and out right back in Allan Nyom and the signing of two very good defensive midfielders in Etienne Capoue and Valon Behrami.

Fans also believe the club have done well by loaning out some players rather than selling them, such is the case with Gabriele Angella. Regarding Matej Vydra’s loan most fans are happy with the £2.5 million pound loan fee that the club will receive from Reading and think that if Reading do go up and pay £10 million to sign Vydra, that wouldn’t be a bad bit of business for the club.

However some Watford fans are a bit less positive and have expressed concerns regarding the large amount of players who have come in and out of the club this summer. Too much change in a short space of time is a big worry to some fans.

One fan I feel hit the nail on the head in response to this question by saying “only time will tell.” Hopefully by the end of this season all Watford fans can look back and praise the work Gino Pozzo has done in this transfer window.

Thoughts on Quique Sanchez Flores?

Responses to this question were surprisingly negative from some but not all Watford fans. No doubt the recent loss to Manchester City and the fact that the Hornets are yet to pick up their first win of the season has played a part in the responses I received.

The most common responses to this question were that he lacks a plan B and isn’t flexible enough. I don’t think anyone can argue with the statement that the club has been solid at the back in their first 4 Premier League games having picked up 2 clean sheets already. Yet it’s Watford’s offence that is the concerning factor, unlike last year. In the last 3 games the Hornets have registered just 1 shot on target and that was against Preston in the Capital One Cup. Watford fans clearly want to see Flores changing the game plan during the match, should the players find it hard to create goal-scoring chances.

However looking at the positive comments many fans state that the attack will come but the team had to build from the back during pre-season. I agree that the club did need to sort out some of the problems that they experienced in the defence last year, especially given that in the Premier League they would be on the back foot a lot more. In my opinion Quique has done well in creating a more solid back 4 but now he has to work on how Watford will counter attack in games where they are pegged back.

Where do you think Watford will finish in the Premier League?

This question brought a much more positive response, with no fans tipping the club for relegation. The most common prediction was 16th place in the League, which I’m sure most fans would be happy with. Answers ranged from 17th place all the way up to 14th place but the answer of 16th was by far the most common.
