Newcastle United have joined the race for Inter Milan’s Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri, according to Italian media reports. Shaqiri, who has fallen out with manager Roberto Mancini, looks set to leave Inter this Summer.
The Swiss international winger has already turned down a move to the Premier League via Stoke City, and now it looks like the Toon are looking to take advantage of Shaqiri’s seemingly imminent departure from Italy. Unfortunately, while Newcastle have had recent success in tempting big transfers in the shape of Giorginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic to St. James’ Park, it seems they aren’t the only club monitoring Shaqiri’s situation at Inter. Everton and Schalke are also rumoured to be interested in making a move for the player.
In my opinion, Newcastle could do with another winger – especially one as talented as Shaqiri. Rolando Aarons is a future star and has impressed during pre-season with an awesome overhead volley from very close range in the 4-3 defeat to Portland Timbers 2. Remy Cabella on the other hand, has been a complete waste of money. Shows quality in dribs and drabs but is overly confident of his ability to step-over and make a break for it. Don’t get me started on Yoan Gouffran either, it wouldn’t be pretty.
Shaqiri would undoubtedly be a very welcome addition to the Toon, his direct style of play would have been invaluable last season with his dribbling ability, his hard-to-shift frame and his tendency to pick out a killer ball. Things which Newcastle have lacked in abundance recently.
Unfortunately, any official enquiries, or, offers are yet to be seen.
