MLS Week in Review | MLS Weekly Round-Up
During the week of July 26th, there were 11 matches in Major League Soccer.
NYCFC faced off against Orlando FC, the 2015 expansion teams did not disappoint. David Villa opened up the scoring in the 45th minute. A ball was played over the top by Angelino, and with a center back shielded off, Villa brought the ball down with one touch and was able to hammer home the shot near post. In the 50th minute Cyle Larin equalized for Orlando. Servando Carrasco chipped a ball over the NYCFC back line, Larin ran onto it, dribbled into the box and fired with his left foot to find the low near post corner. 3 minutes later in the 53′, Javier Calle gave NYCFC the lead. Thomas McNamara found space on the end line and was able to slide a ball on the ground across the face of goal for a wide open Calle who just had to tap the ball in. Just a few minutes later Larin brought Orlando FC back even again in the 61′. Carlos Rivas got on the end of a through ball and played a ball across the box where Larin one timed it into the bottom corner after beating his defender to the spot. The tie would not last for long, David Villa put his team back in front in the 67th minute. Kwadwo Poku dribbled into the offensive end and played a ball into the feet of Villa. David Villa took a touch to get separation from his defender just outside the eighteen yard box, his attempt on goal was deflected by a defender, and passed a hopeless keeper who could not react fast enough after the deflection. 4 minutes later the NYCFC offense found the back of the net again on the counter attack. Kwadwo Poku dribbled the ball into the offensive third and passed to Thomas McNamara who dribbled into the six yard box and fired a left footed shot into the back of the net, near post. In the 85th minute Cyle Larin gave his team a glimpse at hope after putting his 3rd goal of the game away. Kaka played him into the 18 where he fired an unorthodox shot with the outside of his right foot that found the top right corner. Mix Diskerud put the game to bed, NYCFC charged up the field on a 3 on 1 after an Orlando attempt to tie the game. Kwadwo Poku drew the focus of the goalie and when he charged out, he slid the ball across the net where Diskerud tapped it home in the 90+2′. NYCFC won the game 5-3. Making his debut after recently being signed was Andrea Pirlo.
Philadelphia Union traveled to D.C. United, and right from the start it was an exciting match. In the 1st minute, Philadelphia scored to take the lead. C.J. Sapong received a ball from Cristián Maidana, shielded off his defender in the box and was able to turn and fire a shot into the bottom corner. 3 minutes later in the 4′, the Union struck again. This time it was Sebastien Le Toux, the ball was intended to be a ground pass from the left flank, but the defenders could not get a touch and the ball rolled into the bottom corner passed the blinded keeper. In the 37th minute Chris Korb found space on the right-wing and swung a ball into the box, Álvaro Saborio was all alone at the back post and struck his volley perfectly to the bottom corner. The score at the break was 2-1 with Philadelphia in the lead. 10 minutes into the 2nd half, Fabian Espindola fired a shot on goal from distance, the keeper made the save but punched it right into the path of Nick DeLeon who tapped home the easy rebound to equalize the game. With 10 minutes remaining in the game D.C. United took the lead, Chris Korb played a long ball into the box where Fabian Espindola front cut his defender, and headed the ball into the back of the net. D.C. United scored 3 unanswered goals to win the game 3-2.
San Jose Earthquakes faced off against the Western Conference leaders, Vancouver White Caps. Vancouver opened up the scoring in the 4th minute, Mauro Rosales jumped on a poor Earthquakes clearance and side footed the ball under the diving keeper for the early lead. They would add to that lead in the 32′ with a goal coming from Kendall Waston, off of a corner kick placed nicely in the box by Mauro Rosales. Octavio Rivero put the game out of reach in the 56th minute with a penalty kick. San Jose fought until the end and were able to score a goal late in extra time. Shea Salinas found space on the end line and played it back out to the top of the 18 where Quincy Amarikwa fired home the finish. Not long after that, the final whistle blew, Vancouver were the winners 3-1.
After a week off for the All Star Break, matches resumed on Saturday the 1st.
Montreal Impact clashed against NYCFC. The Impact did not take long to get going, a ball over the top was played into the feet of Dominic Oduro who beat his defender with speed, dribbled through the goalies lead, and tapped the ball in for the early lead. In the 32nd minute, another ball over the top found its way through the NYCFC defense. This time Ignacio Piatti was on the end of it, and beat the keeper with a lovely chip to give Montreal the 2-0 lead. After the second half NYCFC stepped up their game and started to apply pressure to Montreal. This resulted in a PK in the 67th minute. David Villa stepped up a buried it to give his team a sight at a comeback. The comeback was ended when Ignacio Piatti put home a penalty kick of his own in the 84th minute. Right off the restart NYCFC got the goal back, Thomas McNamara scored from close range to put his team back in striking distance. Montreal held off the NYCFC attack and the game finished as a 3-2 victory for them. Andrea Pirlo made his first start in MLS, played all 90 minutes. Frank Lampard made his first appearance for NYCFC as a substitute in the 70 minute.
D.C. United hosted Real Salt Lake in an exciting 10 goal match. Real Salt Lake got things going quickly in the first minute, Joao Plata fired a low shot from just outside the 18 which was placed perfectly in the bottom left corner, passed the stretched keeper. In the 20th minute Kyle Beckerman added the RSL lead. Joao Plata layed off a ball from about 30 yards out, Beckerman struck the ball first time, and it screamed passed the keeper, off the post, and in. D.C. United would get one back before half time. In the 42nd minute Chris Rolfe picked a defenders pocket in the box, and curled his shot into the upper right corner. D.C. United came out in the 2nd half flying, Chris Rolfe equalized in the 54′ off a penalty kick. Taylor Kemp then gave United the lead 5 minutes later. He one timed a bouncing ball that was cleared away from goal to about 20 yards out that was rocketed into the upper right corner. Aaron Maund then brought RSL back even 5 minutes later, a free kick was swung in by Javier Morales, and Maund jumped the highest and used his head to redirect the ball into the lower left corner. Fabian Espindola put D.C. United ahead 1 minute later in the 63′. He pounced on a rebound and ever so slightly rolled the ball over the line while multiple defenders tried to get a foot in the way. RSL did not wait long to get the game back in the balance, Abdoulie Mansally fired from a bad angle and the ball beat the keeper on the near post side, who was looking for the ball across the face of goal. In the 79th minute Perry Kitchen put United ahead, off of a short corner cross from Taylor Kemp. Nick DeLeon put the game to bed in the 85′, he hit a power curler with his left foot that caught the keeper out off his line with no chance as the ball flew into the side netting. D.C. United won the game 6-4, and continued their run atop the Eastern Conference Standings.
NY Red Bulls traveled to PPL Park to face off against the Philadelphia Union. The game remained scoreless until Sacha Kljestan converted a penalty kick in the 66′. Sebastien Le Toux then answered in the 73rd minute, he was able to control the ball bouncing around the 6 yard box and fire home the goal to tie the game. Bradley Wright-Phillips scored off of a ball from his brother Shaun Wright-Phillips who recently made the move over from QPR. Anatole Bertrand Abang would put the icing on the cake for NY when he scored in the 90+4′ off of a counter attack that only had one Union defender back, he was able to slot it home in the low right hand corner. The NY Red Bulls won 3-1 put them into 2nd place in the Eastern Conference.
Toronto FC were matched up against the New England Revolution. The Revolution opened up the scoring in the 35′, a free kick in the center of the field was used to spring Kelyn Rowe who one timed the ball over the top across the face of goal, and Charlie Davies beat his man to the ball to tap it in. Right before half Lee Nguyen converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0 in the 44′. Charlie Davies added to the lead in the 62nd minute, a set piece ball was swung in from the right flank, it bounced off of a few legs and the ball fell to Davies at the back post who finished it off. Toronto FC would get one back later in the game, Jonathan Osorio was the goal scorer. Marco Delgado found him all alone atop the 18, and Osorio calmly one timed the ball into the back of the net. The game would finish 3-1 with the Revolution picking up a much needed 3 points.
Orlando FC hosted Columbus Crew in an exciting match from the start. Federico Higuaín got the goal scoring going just 4 minutes into the match, Justin Meram dribbled through the defense and from the top of the 18 played Higuaín through, and he side footed the ball from from 6 yards out. Cyle Larin brought Orlando back even off of a ground cross from Corey Ashe that found its way past the defenders and Larin knifed between two center backs to tap home the goal. Darwin Cerén put his team in the lead in the 38th minute, after his initial shot was blocked, the rebound came right back to him. He did not miss the second time and fired the ball into the side netting. Cyle Larin would score his 5th goal in 2 games to give Orlando some breathing room. The ball was a bouncing cross that sat up for him nicely after he checked his run and watched his defender go flying passed him. The finish was struck well into the low corner. Aurélien Collin would make it 4-1 in the 77th minute, the corner kick was curled towards the near post and Collin got his head to it to flick it by the keeper. Cristian Higuita joined the goal scoring party in the 85′, Kaka played a ball right into the middle of the box and Higuita got his head to it and directed it home. In the 90th minute Aurélien Collin found the back of the net again, only this time it was his own goal. The game finished 5-2 in favor of Orlando FC.
Huston Dynamo played against Sporting KC, which was a low scoring hard fought battle. Dominic Dwyer opened the scoring early in the 4th minute, he got on the end of a Benny Feilhaber cross and flicked it to the low corner with his head. Ricardo Clark would grab a late equalizer off of a Brad Davis corner kick. The game finished in a 1-1 draw.
The LA Galaxy traveled to Colorado Rapids in search of a win to get their season headed in the right direction. The Rapids would get on the board early with a goal from Marcelo Sarvas in the 12th minute. A ball was cleared to his feet and he danced around his defender, and was able to turn and rip a shot from 6 yards out into the back of the net. Sebastian Lletget would get a goal back for the Galaxy in the 56′, he was played in by Juninho on the left side of the box and fired home the shot to the far post. Alan Gordan put his team ahead in the 70th minute, a rebound from a Steven Gerrard shot fell right at his feet and he one timed it right to the back of the net. Robbie Keane would finish the game off later in the 90+2′, on a 3 versus 1 counter attack he played the ball to Gerrard who returned it back to Keane who rolled the ball into the bottom corner. The game finished 3-1 with the win going to the Galaxy.
Vancouver White Caps FC made the trip to Seattle to take on the Sounders. Pa Modou Kah put the visitors ahead just 4 minutes into the game. He finished a ball that was bouncing through the box after it had been swung in on a set piece. Pa Modou Kah would add a second goal in the 49th minute, Cristian Techera fired a shot in off of a short corner, and Kah used his heel to change direction of the ball and leaving the goalie going the wrong way. Pedro Morales would put icing on the cake in the 75th minute, he hit a bomb of a free kick over the wall and into the near post side netting to give Vancouver the win 3-0.
