Today has been a brilliant day for Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson. Not only has he officially been announced as the red-half of Merseyside’s new club captain after the departure of Steven Gerrard. But, he has also been unveiled alongside Lionel Messi, for FIFA 16’s cover.
Yes, Jordan Henderson has been put on the cover of FIFA 16 – in front of players such as; Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero and Tottenham’s young Harry Kane. If this wasn’t bizarre enough news for today, it is believed that one of the main contributing factors to Henderson’s success over his fellow Premier League peers was down to none other than NBA superstar LeBron James. The global superstar (LeBron, that is) is a renowned Liverpool fan, and a minority shareholder in the club, and he took to his Facebook page to advise his ~21million fans to vote for the midfielder…
Although the vote itself does seem to have been contrived, social media has run with the news, and, the large majority of positive tweets regarding Henderson’s inclusion are from Liverpool fans alone. The overwhelming feeling though, is one of shock and disbelief. It is part and parcel though of what can happen when you leave these sorts of decision to the public vote, but, deep down FIFA and EA would have known that regardless of who was voted in for it – the social media world would explode and create its own marketing voice for the game. Very coy, indeed.
Henderson doesn’t seem to mind though, especially as he’s probably more excited and glad with being named Liverpool’s captain. Speaking positively to the Liverpool Echo;
“Being part of the first FIFA cover vote was an incredible honour and it’s an amazing feeling to know that the public voted for me to come out on top and to be on the cover of FIFA 16 alongside Messi,”
