Swiss authorities have confirmed that six FIFA officials have been arrested and detained pending extradition at the request of American authorities.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter is not one of the six arrested, however his vice-president Jeffrey Webb is among those being held. Eugenio Figueredo and Jack Warner are also understood to be under arrest.
FIFA Congress takes place on Friday in Zürich, where Blatter is seeking a fifth term as association president.
In a statement, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice says US authorities suspect the officials of having taken bribes of millions of dollars. It says the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York is investigating these individuals on suspicion of the acceptance of bribes and between the early 90s and the present day.
The New York Times reports that the non-uniformed Swiss officers arrived at the Zürich hotel, took keys from the front desk and arrested the FIFA officials.
